THE JACOBITES PIPE AND DRUM BAND
Not your grandpa’s pipe band!
The Jacobites repertoire includes everything from Celtic to country, calypso to rock, gospel to Beethoven, Americana to sing-along. Although the bagpipes and drums are the heart of this fun-loving group of musicians, the band includes fiddles, brass, guitars, keyboard, vocalists and Highland dancers.
Founded in 2002 by Pipe Major and Artistic Director Gary Reinstrom and Pipe Sergeant and Coordinator Larry Jacobs, the band has grown to over 50 members and has performed at virtually every venue in SW Florida, including the Van Wezel Performing Arts Center, Historic Asolo Theater, Glenridge Performing Arts Center and many, many churches and festivals.
The band’s vision is to share the joys of bagpipe music throughout the community and to provide free bagpipe, drum and Highland dance lessons to anyone and everyone, young and not-so-young.
Gary Reinstrom, who has been playing the pipes since he was 13 years old, is a professional musician who has performed with many SW Florida musical organizations, including the Sarasota Orchestra Sarasota Pops Orchestra. He taught bagpiping at Riverview High School for many years. The moving force behind the band, Gary’s energy and enthusiasm are contagious.
Larry Jacobs, the son of a Glaswegian, became a student of Gary’s 15 years ago and in 2002, when Gary was asked to perform for the Patriots Day Parade, the two of them formed the Jacobites Pipe and Drum Band. And the rest, as they say, is history.
